Post Surgery Body Contouring
Patients maintaining significant weight loss are often interested in improving their looks by removing excess skin and fatty tissue. We are pleased to recommend the Emory Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Center.
Overview
After major weight loss, skin often becomes baggy and thin around the stomach, legs, arms, breasts, and neck. Emory board-certified surgeons are skilled at removing and tightening skin through a variety of procedures:
- Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
- Belt Lipectomy (Lower Body Lift)
- Brachioplasty (Arm Lift)
- Face and Neck Lift
- Inner Thigh Lift
- Liposuction (Excess Fat Removal)
- Mastopexy
- Reduction Mammoplasty
(Breast Reduction)
Because these procedures are considered cosmetic, insurance companies rarely cover body contouring. In instances when the procedure is a well-documented medical necessity, insurers may make exceptions.
Body Contouring Candidates
- Patients whose weight loss - and wieght -- has stabilized for at least one year
- Patients who have large amounts of excess skin, with multiple loose skin rolls and folds around their body
- Patients who want to feel better about their bodies
- Patients who do not smoke

Body Contouring Procedures
Abdominoplasty (Stomach Tuck)
With an abdominoplasty, surgeons remove excess skin and fat from the stomach area. Then, to redefine the waistline, they tighten skin, remove fatty tissue, and treat scars and stretch marks.
Patients can choose from a variety of abdominoplasties: endoscopic abdominoplasty, mini abdominoplasty, full abdominoplasty, or panniculectomy.
Belt Lipectomy (Lower Body Lift)
In a belt lipectomy, surgeons remove excess tissue from the back, abdomen, outer thighs, and buttocks. Patients can expect a flatter stomach, more defined waistline, lifted outer thighs, and higher buttocks.
Brachioplasty (Arm Lift)
In this treatment, surgeons tighten and lift the loose skin that has developed around the arm. Additional upper-arm contouring can be achieved with liposuction.
Face and Neck Lift
Surgeons tighten facial skin and strategically reposition tissue for a natural look. Suitable candidates have deep lines around the mouth, loss of a well-defined jaw line, sagging skin near the cheekbones, and loose skin or excess fatty tissue in the neck.
Inner Thigh Lift
This procedure removes excess fat and loose skin on the inner thighs, while tightening the remaining skin. When possible, scars and stretch marks are treated. For the best results, inner thigh lifts can also be supplemented with liposuction.
Liposuction (Excess Fat Removal)
In the country’s most common plastic surgical procedure, surgeons make remove unwanted fatty tissue from different parts of the body. The best candidates fall in a normal weight range, with pockets of excess fat and firm, elastic skin.
Mastopexy (Breast Lift)
For patients with significant weight loss, surgeons reshape breasts by removing excess skin, lifting the nipples, and reducing the areolae. In addition, breast implants can be inserted.
Reduction Mammoplasty (Breast Reduction)
Surgeons remove excess skin and breast tissue, reposition the nipple, and reshape the breast. Liposuction can also be applied to remove excess fat from the sides of the breast.
