Emory Bariatric Research

At the Emory Bariatric Center, we’re committed to better outcomes for patients now and in the future. That’s why our team includes clinicians and research scientists, and why we regularly collaborate with medical experts throughout Emory Healthcare.

Together, with our patients, we are making strides to better understand obesity and obesity-related diseases. With each new discovery, we deliver our findings back to the people who can benefit most - our patients.

Research highlights include:

  1. An ongoing partnership with Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health to enhance bariatric support groups, to help patients better maintain weight loss.
  2. An examination of how gastric bypass surgery results in diabetes-reducing hormonal changes, with an emphasis on replicating hormonal adjustment without surgery.
  3. A continuing investigation about how to match bariatric patients with the most effective surgery for treating their particular health issues.
  4. A multi-year study about how to avoid nutritional deficiencies after gastric bypass surgery, with funding from the National Institutes of Health.

In addition to our research, the Emory Bariatric Center also sets annual priorities designed to curb complications and enhance results. In the last few years, these initiatives have helped us to eliminate post-surgery stomach leakage, previously one of the most serious complications resulting from bariatric procedures.
