Surgical Weight Loss
Bariatric, or weight loss surgery is a tool that, when combined with positive lifestyle changes, can change the lives of those whose weight is causing health problems or interfering with mobility. Weight loss surgery often makes sense for those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) above 35. Bariatric surgery typically results in quick and dramatic weight loss, and significantly reduces obesity-related health issues, such as diabetes.
The Emory Bariatric Center is nationally accredited as a Level 1 Center of Excellence by the Bariatric Surgery Center Network of the American College of Surgeons. That means bariatric surgery patients can expect thorough pre-operative support and education, world-class surgeons operating in a top-notch facility, and effective post-operative monitoring and follow-up.
Three surgical weight loss options are available for our patients:

Gastric Banding
During this minimally-invasive weight loss procedure, doctors place an adjustable silicone band around the upper stomach to reduce stomach size. Patients feel full more quickly and, as a result, eat less. The surgery is reversible when medically indicated.

Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypasses reduce stomach size and divert food’s passage through the small intestine to limit digestion. Like in gastric banding, patients feel full after eating less food. In addition, food that is consumed has less opportunity to be absorbed because of the re-routing of the small intestine. Following a gastric bypass, most patients generally lose two-thirds of their excess weight within two years.

Sleeve Gastrectomy
In a sleeve gastrectomy, doctors permanently remove 75% of the stomach. The remaining, smaller stomach is reshaped into the form of a sleeve. Patients experience normal digestion and report feeling full more quickly and having less hunger.
Weight loss surgery does involve some risks and may not be appropriate for all patients. But in combination with other bariatric treatments – including consultations with nutritionists and wellness coaching – it can lead to substantial long-term weight loss. For patients who need to follow a medically supervised weight loss program or lose weight before bariatric surgery, Emory Bariatric Center can offer a program to fit your needs.
