Mammography Screening
For most women, mammography screening should begin at age 40, and be followed by routine screenings every year. These screenings are performed in order to detect breast cancer at an early stage well before physical symptoms can be seen or felt.
Screening mammograms are available at:
|
The Emory Clinic |
Emory University Hospital Midtown |
Diagnostic Mammography
If questions are raised by the screening mammogram, or if you have clinical symptoms, a diagnostic mammogram is performed to obtain a more detailed image of the breast. Diagnostic mammography provides additional views of the breast and may use additional techniques to resolve these questions.
Diagnostic mammograms are performed at:

Additional Diagnostic Procedures
The Emory Breast Imaging Center offers a variety of diagnostic options that include second opinions. Our team of physicians and technologists consult with you to determine the most appropriate diagnostic plan to meet your specific health needs. The following procedures may be needed as determined by your radiologist.
- Breast Ultrasound: uses sound waves to create images of the internal structure of the breast
- Cyst Aspiration: uses ultrasound to guide a thin needle into the breast in order to retrieve fluid
- Ultrasound Guided Core Biopsy: ultrasound is used to guide a needle into a solid mass to obtain a sample of the breast tissue
- Stereotactic Core Biopsy: a stereotactic X-ray device is used instead of ultrasound to guide the needle into breast tissue
- Breast MRI: a new technology that provides additional information in conjunction with mammography and ultrasound
- MR Guided Biopsy: uses MRI to guide a needle into the breast tissue for sampling
