About Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplant

Bone marrow transplant (BMT) can strengthen the body to fight cancer by replacing the blood building cells in the body that are destroyed by chemotherapy and radiation treatments, which are used to kill the cancer cells, with healthy stem cells found in bone marrow.
In a bone marrow transplant, the patient's diseased bone marrow is destroyed and healthy bone marrow stem cells are infused into the patient's blood-stream. In a successful BMT transplant, the new bone marrow migrates to the cavities of the large bones and begins producing healthy, normal blood cells.
There are several types of bone marrow transplants, also referred to as stem-cell transplants. Which type is used for any given patient depends on the specific patient's disease as well as other factors such as the patient's age and the availability of a suitable donor. Learn more >>
