LASIK Eye Surgery Candidate & Refractive Screenings

Laser vision correction is now in its second decade of helping patients reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses and contact lenses. As testimony to its life-changing benefits, thousands of ophthalmologists, optometrists, and patients around the world have become so impressed with the results of laser vision correct that over one million procedures are now performed each year in the United States.

Heavy demand for laser vision correction has inspired surgeons and laser manufacturers to make tremendous advancements in both Excimer laser technology and surgical technique. When laser vision correction was first performed in the 1980s, only low to moderately nearsighted patients without astigmatism could be treated. Today, with the advanced technology and variety of procedures performed by Emory Vision surgeons, the pool of candidates for LASIK eye surgery has grown to where there are safe and effective treatment options for just about every person who wants to reduce his or her dependence on glasses or contacts.

Effective treatment options are now available for individuals who were not good candidates for LASIK eye surgery in the past.

Initial Exam

Emory understands that exploring the possibility of a vision correction procedure is one of your most important undertakings. In order to insure the safety and effectiveness of every procedure, we conduct a thorough custom evaluation that includes two different Wavefront systems for mapping your cornea. We then confirm the results to provide a complete assessment of the best options for each individual’s vision improvement.

At the end of your custom initial exam, your physician, along with the Emory clinical team, will produce a personal vision profile that details the shape of your eyes, how they respond in various lighting situation, how well they work together, and whether there are any factors that could negatively affect your surgical outcome. By creating this profile, the team makes sure that you are the right candidate for LASIK eye surgery. The detail-oriented consultation allows you to make an informed decision that you can feel confident about.
