Orthopaedic Cancer Treatments for Bone and Joint Tumors

Primary bone cancer makes up only 1 percent of all cancers. Even so, finding out you have it is alarming. Emory Healthcare’s experienced orthopaedic oncology team stands ready to treat your condition.

Our team includes orthopedic surgeons, oncologists and radiologists. We treat tumors and cancers in the musculoskeletal system, including the:

  • Bones
  • Cartilage
  • Joints
  • Muscles
  • Soft tissues
  • Tendons

Our team diagnoses and treats both cancerous and noncancerous tumors. We’ll create a personalized care plan for your condition and be right by your side through every step of the process

Types of Bone Cancer

Cancer can grow in any bone, but it’s most common in the pelvis or long bones like the arms and legs. Common types of bone cancer include chondrosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma and osteosarcoma. Less common types include chordoma and clear cell chondrosarcoma.

You’ll find specialized care for common and rare types of bone tumors at Emory Health.

Primary Bone Cancer vs. Bone Metastasis

Primary bone cancer starts in bone cells. It’s different from cancer that starts in another area of the body and spreads to the bones. This is bone metastasis. It happens when cancer cells from the breast, prostate, lungs or other area start to grow in the bones.

Noncancerous Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors

Most soft tissue and bone tumors are noncancerous and unlikely to spread. However, many must be surgically removed so new, healthy tissue can grow. The type of tumor, size and location will guide the course of treatment.

Treatment for Bone Cancer and Tumors

Our team offers comprehensive treatment options and therapies for cancer and noncancerous tumors.

At Emory Healthcare, you may have treatments such as:

  • Diagnostic imaging (X-rays, MRI, ultrasound)
