Managing Pregnancy and Congenital Heart Disease

Karen Erie was born with a congenital heart defect that caused her to have many surgeries by the time she was 4 months old. Thanks to the expertise at physicians at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Karen survived the surgeries but still needed regular follow up as she got older.

When Karen was ready to have a child she consulted with Wendy Book, MD, the expert on pregnancy with women with congenital heart defects. Dr. Book shared with Karen the potential complications of having a child and worked with Karen’s OB physicians to ensure a safe and healthy delivery.

Karen’s daughter Audrey is now close to 2 years old and she is the light of Karen’s world.  Karen hopes to have more children one day and will consult with Dr. Book to make sure her body is healthy enough to so.
