Breast Augmentation

Breast Enhancement or Breast Enlargement?

Breast enlargement, or augmentation mammoplasty, enhances the body contour of a woman who is unhappy with her breast size. This procedure can also correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy or balance a difference in breast sizes. In certain cases where the breasts have sagging or droopiness, a simultaneous breast lift may be necessary. Breast augmentation can increase the patient’s bust line by one or more bra cup sizes.

During the breast augmentation procedure, a breast implant (saline or gel) is inserted through an incision made in the crease under the breast, around the areola (dark tissue around the nipple) or through the armpit. The implant may be placed under the breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle. Women may choose to have saline or silicone implants. Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure that usually takes one to one and a half hours under general anesthesia. Stitches absorb on their own, but the incisions are usually covered with tape for one to two weeks. Most patients return to routine activity within the first week, but aerobic activity and strenuous upper-body activity are limited for three to four weeks.

Come in and meet with one of our board certified breast surgeons who will answer any questions you may have about breast augmentation surgery, the implants and what you can expect during recovery.

3-D Imaging
When meeting with our plastic surgeons to discuss the outcome of your breast augmentation surgery, it is critical to be able to make the decision that is right for you. At Emory, we use the 3-D Vectra imaging system, which is a unique technology that allows us to simulate your results and may help in the decision-making process, such as what size you would like to be.
