Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is for a woman experiencing health problems or extreme self-consciousness associated with very large, heavy breasts. Medical problems associated with large breasts include back and neck pain caused by the excessive breast weight, skin irritation, bra strap indentations, poor posture and interference with normal daily activities such as exercise.

The surgery removes fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. This can alleviate health problems associated with large breasts and improve a woman’s confidence in her appearance. Reduction mammoplasty is often covered by insurance. Advanced techniques can reposition the nipple and shape the breast, generally preserving the patient’s sensation and ability to breast feed and leaving minimal scars. Liposuction may be used at the time of breast reduction to remove excess fat from outside the breast.

Breast reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure. It is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes two to three hours. Patients will need to limit strenuous upper-body activity and wear a sports bra for several weeks after surgery. The incisions are made around the areola and straight down in a vertical line to the crease under the breast. In cases where the breasts are particularly larger or droopy, and additional incision placed horizontally in this crease will be utilized. Through these incisions, excess skin and tissue are removed and the nipple and areola are repositioned higher.
