Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

For those patients dissatisfied with the size or shape of their nose, rhinoplasty can be performed for reshaping purposes. Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to improve the nose – enhancing the proportion to other facial feature, thereby creating a more smooth and harmonious appearance. The surgery may also correct impaired breathing issues due to structural abnormalities of the nose when combined with internal nasal procedures.

Rhinoplasty surgery can change:

  • Nasal deviation or asymmetry
  • Nose profile – removal of a hump
  • Nasal tip – refining a bulbous or thick tip
  • Nose width – narrowing of the nose

Typically, the surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. At the Emory Aesthetic Center, our rhinoplasty specialists are ready to help you achieve the results you desire.

Video FAQs:

What can I expect when recovering from rhinoplasty?

It is important for patients to recognize that patience is of the utmost importance during the first few weeks after rhinoplasty. Patients typically experience discomfort and nasal congestion for the first week after rhinoplasty, but prescription pain medications will significantly reduce discomfort. In addition to nose swelling, the eyelid region may become quite swollen and bruised during this procedure. Patients often have nasal packing that is removed in the first few days. There is usually some type of external splint that adheres to the nose that is removed 7 to 10 days after surgery. Any stitches inside the nose dissolve, while external stitches are removed a week after surgery.

Swelling typically decreases significantly in the first one to three weeks, but can remain to some degree for up to a year before the final result is achieved.

Are the stitches going to be visible?

We do our best to minimize this—the incisions are very well hidden across the columella, the fleshy structure between the nostrils, and inside the nose.

Are the results of rhinoplasty immediate?

It typically takes a little time for the full effect of the procedure to be appreciated. The true and lasting look you have achieved may not be apparent for several months, and it usually takes a full year to completely appreciate the final results.
