After earning a BA in chemistry from Duke University and his MD degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Douglas Morris served his internship and residencies at Vanderbilt University Hospitals in Nashville, Tennessee.  Originally from Marietta, Dr. Morris returned to the Atlanta area when he was awarded a fellowship in cardiology at Emory University Hospitals - and he has been associated with Emory ever since.

Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Morris was appointed as an assistant professor in the Emory Department of Medicine's Division of Cardiology. In 1986, he was appointed Director of the Carlyle Fraser Heart Center at Crawford Long Hospital. Dr. Morris was named Director of the Emory Heart Center in l993.  He was designated J. Willis Hurst Professor of Medicine in l996 and, in 1999, was appointed Vice-Chair of the Department of Medicine of Emory University.

A member of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology (ACC) since 1978, Dr. Morris co-chaired the ACC Scientific Sessions from 1996 through 2000.  His areas of clinical and research interest include interventional cardiology, cardiac catheterization and the treatment of heart valve diseases.

Dr. Morris' achievements as both a medical educator and a cardiologist have been widely recognized. He received the J. Willis Hurst Award for excellence in teaching in 1995 and 2000 and he has been awarded "Outstanding Teacher" seven years in a row by his students. In addition, Dr. Morris has been consistently named as one of Atlanta Magazine's "Ten Best Doctors" in Cardiovascular Disease each year since 1999.

An avid runner who encourages his patients to lead heart healthy, active lifestyles, Dr. Morris was selected to be one of the first torch bearers to participate in the Atlanta leg of the Olympic Torch Relay which culminated at the 2002 Winter Olympics. The Olympic Affairs Team selected Dr. Morris in recognition of his commitment to exercise and fitness as an essential part of cardiovascular health.
