Stress and Infertility

For many infertile couples, there seems to be no cause; however, in recent years, researchers have found a link between stress and infertility. While we know the common physical effects of stress on our body all too well, many are not aware that stress can actually be a cause of infertility in both men and women. Recent studies have shown that a woman's ovarian function is negatively affected when she is stressed, often to the point that she develops amenorrhea.

In women, the stress reaction causes functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA), which is characterized by menstrual irregularities, short cycles, or the lack of a cycle (amenorrhea). The negative consequences of stress are not only limited to reproductive compromise. Fortunately, treatments such as lifestyle counseling can give women a new outlook on life and restore cycles and fertility without resorting to expensive medications.

The fertility of men may also be compromised by stress, especially nutritional stress and excessive exercise, but stress-induced reproductive compromise is generally more difficult to recognize in men.

Overcoming stress-induced infertility is important beyond conception as well. Having control over stress during pregnancy can mean a healthier pregnancy overall.
