Emory Crawford Long Hospital is a remarkable institution with regional, national and international acclaim in the field of neonatology. We opened the first neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the Southeast in 1981, and currently, we serve as the Emory Regional Perinatal Center, one of five centers in the south designated to care for high-risk infants.

So when a birth becomes other than routine, you and your family can be assured that our skilled neonatal nursery staff has the technology and expertise to care for your baby. Our neonatal intensive care nursery is a Level III nursery - a designation which indicates that we can treat almost any medical or surgical newborn problem.

If your baby is born ill or prematurely, he or she will be placed in either our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) or our intermediate care nursery for special attention and treatment. Here your baby will be admitted to an incubator or warming bed and will be cared for closely. Around the clock, your baby's care will be directed by neonatologists. A neonatologist is a pediatrician with additional training and experience in the care of sick and premature infants.
