The MRI provides physicians with a way to view your internal body structures utilizing a combination of radio waves and a magnetic field. No radiation is necessary as with conventional X-rays.

The MRI scanner looks like a large box with an open ended tunnel running through the middle. You will be asked to lie on a comfortable padded table that is gently moved into the opening of the machine where the scanning takes place.

Does the MRI hurt?
No. It is a painless procedure with virtually no known side effects. Many diagnostic tests require radiation; the MRI does not.

What happens when I am in the scanner?
Once inside the scanner, you will likely hear loud clanking and thumping noises as the technician adjusts the radiofrequencies and other controls. It is important to lie as still as possible throughout the scan. Too much activity will interfere with the actual images printed for your doctor to review.

If you scan requires an "enhancement agent" the technician will inject the material into a vein in your arm. Otherwise, the scan is the same as those without the enhancing agent.

A member of our medical staff will go over a detailed checklist prior to your MRI. This is done to let us know if any special preparation is necessary.

The scan should be completed in approximately 45 minutes, however, it is recommended that you allow two hours for the entire appointment.

You may resume all normal activities immediately following the scan.
