Minimally Invasive Mini-lap Radical Retropubic Prostatectomy: Improve Quality of Life

At Emory University, more than 1,000 patients have undergone mini-lap radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP) for clinically localized prostate cancer. Some results from the patients of Emory show that most experience hospitalization of two to three days with typically minimal pain following discharge. Emory patients experienced continence rates of 90-95 percent and potency rates of 66-75 percent, and these rates compare very favorably with other medical centers.

The mini-lap RRP has been compared favorably to laparoscopic radical prostatectomies.  The mini-lap radical prostatectomy is performed in less time that the laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, with the same discomfort and length of stay in the hospital, and reduction in likelihood of bowel and abdominal problems.  Potency rates have not been well defined in most of the laparoscopic series at the present time.  The Emory University urology department continues to explore the new laparoscopic approach, but at this time, Emory experts believe the mini-lap RRP compares favorably to the standard radical open prostatectomy, the perineal prostatectomy, and the laparoscopic prostatectomy.

Dr. Fray F. Marshall and Dr. Peter Nieh both perform this procedure at Emory University Hospital.
