History The birth of the Emory Crawford Long Hospital medical complex occurred in 1908 with the founding of the 26-bed Davis-Fischer Sanatorium. This full-service hospital filled an urgent need for top quality operating facilities in Atlanta. Three years later, founders Dr. E.C. Davis and Dr. Luther Fischer moved the hospital to its present site, bounded by Peachtree Street, West Peachtree Street, Linden Avenue and Pine Street.
In 1931, the hospital was renamed in honor of Dr. Crawford W. Long, the Georgia physician who was the first to use ether anesthesia during surgery. Visitors to the hospital's museum may see some of Dr. Long's personal artifacts and medical memorabilia from the hospital's early days.
Emory Crawford Long continues to build relationships with the metro Atlanta community through employee participation in charity events such as walkathons, screenings for prostate cancer and other health concerns, facilitation of support groups and holiday events. In addition, Emory Crawford Long works with many Atlanta corporations to promote employee health and wellness.
From a 26-bed sanatorium to a tertiary care facility with more than 550 beds, Emory Crawford Long Hospital has a rich heritage. For more than 85 years we have established a solid foundation for outstanding quality health care and medical integrity for Atlantans and the Southeast.
