Cardiac Care
The Emory University Hospital cardiology program has been recognized as one of the top 10 programs in U.S. News & World Report for nine years since the magazine began ranking hospitals in 1990. Emory has long been a major referral institution for patients with complex cardiac problems. The Emory Heart and Vascular Center offers total vascular care to our patients for both cardiac and peripheral vessels.

Emory pioneered angioplasty, a procedure now used worldwide for opening clogged coronary arteries without surgery. Research by our cardiac team has shown that for some patients angioplasty is just as effective as bypass surgery, even for more than one blocked artery.

Transplantation
| Emory is the only multiple organ transplant center in the state of Georgia. Since the first corneal transplant was performed at Emory in 1947, we have been a pioneer of transplantation for the state of Georgia. Today, heart, lung, liver, pancreas, kidney/pancreas, and kidney transplants are performed at Emory University Hospital. And, in certain situations, combination transplants such as heart/lung, liver/kidney, and heart/kidney are also being performed. |

More than 250 organ transplant procedures are performed at Emory each year. We have the distinction of being both a preferred transplant center for many insurance carriers as well as a Medicare-approved center.
Pediatric transplantation is performed at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, our affiliate children's hospital. |

Oncology
In cancer treatment, teamwork really counts. This complex disease has many facets, often requiring the expertise of several medical specialists. The Winship Cancer Institute is the coordinating center for a vast array of resources in medical, surgical, and radiation oncology, diagnostic imaging, and the subspecialties of cancer care spread throughout Emory, from blood and bone marrow stem cell transplantation to internationally recognized breast reconstruction.
As a leader in cancer patient care and research, the Winship Cancer Institute offers unique new therapies including more than 200 clinical trials for all tumor types and stages of cancer.
What makes Emory different is its growing ability to provide individualized care based on the Winship Cancer Institute's strength in cancer genomics research. Winship Cancer Institute scientists are increasingly able to identify specific genes that make cancers arise and spread. Determining why some people develop cancer, why some cancers are more virulent and aggressive than others, and why some tumors respond differently to different treatment is pointing the way toward new means of prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.
In addition to research and a broad patient care base from across the region, the Winship Cancer Institute impacts cancer treatment, early diagnosis and prevention as a proud participant in Governor Roy Barne's Georgia Cancer Coalition.
Diagnostic Radiology
| No longer limited by the one-dimensional images of conventional X-rays, Emory physicians use advanced imaging techniques to diagnose and guide treatment of diseases and injuries, often without exploratory surgery. |

Emory is the only medical center in Georgia with a cyclotron and radiochemistry laboratory accompanying its positron emission tomography (PET) scanner. These make possible the production of various radionuclides needed to image different parts of the body. |

We are finding new applications for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), such as helping us diagnose and treat cardiac disease and strokes.
Emory's interventional radiology program continues to make advancement toward less invasive, less costly, image-guided procedures to improve the quality of patient care. |
Neurosciences
Emory is a leader in the neurosciences, especially in the treatment of aneurysms, brain tumors and movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease.
We were the first hospital in the country to offer a precise surgical procedure (microelectrode-guided pallidotomy) for treating Parkinson's disease.
Mental Health Services
Adult patients who choose Emory's multidisciplinary approach to inpatient mental health services receive comprehensive medical psychiatric care from a skillful and highly-specialized team of caregivers.
Comprehensive evaluative and treatment services are delivered through an individualized and confidential approach respectful of privacy and dignity, and includes:
- Expert biological, psychological and psychosocial evaluation and treatment
- Intensive and concurrent medical evaluation and testing
- Skillful nursing assessment and care
- Psychotherapeutic approaches tailored to individual treatment needs
- Comprehensive family education and discharge planning
- Treatment modalities include individual, group, family and milieu therapies
Services may include:
- Psychological and neuropsychological evaluation and testing
- Detoxification and stabilization of substance abuse and dependence
- Participation in research-based protocols through the Emory University School of Medicine's nationally-recognized Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
