Recovery and rehabilitation is a critical aspect of stroke treatment.  There may be an array of complications and impairments as a result of a stroke, from minor and major physical problems to mental depression.

The Emory MBNA Stroke Center offers patients the most comprehensive rehabilitative program in the Southeast.  Our rehabilitation team includes speech therapists, physical and occupational therapists and others who specialize in helping stroke patients with all aspects of recovery.

Strokes impairments are directly related to the side of the brain in which the attack occurred, the severity of the stroke and the time elapsed before treatment.

Impairments as a result of stroke may include:

• paralysis
• speech and/or language problems
• vision problems
• memory loss
• behavioral problems   
• depression

In addition, some patients who suffer a severe stroke may have to re-learn basic skills such as body hygiene and grooming, reading and writing, as well as social interaction. And, families of stroke patients will need education and support to help care for their family member and to cope with their own potential issues, which can include psychological and financial stress.

The Emory MBNA Stroke Center has a complete staff and an in-depth program to address these conditions, working with each patient individually to develop a customized rehabilitation plan.
