Heart Transplant

An incision is made through the breastbone and the original heart is removed, leaving portions of the right and left atrium. The left atrium, right atrium, pulmonary artery and aorta of the new heart are connected to the remaining portion of the recipient's heart.

The Adult Cardiac Transplant Service at Emory is one of the few transplant centers in the country offering this procedure. Eligible patients often have high lung pressures or a larger body and heart size than that of the donor's. During the procedure, the surgeon leaves the diseased native heart so that its right side can continue pumping blood to the lungs. The new donor heart is attached to the native heart to function as the left side, pumping blood out to the body. Communication is established between the right and left sides of both hearts.
