Emory Children's Center Division of Infectious Disease
The Division is dedicated to providing education to the community to prevent infectious diseases and to providing consultation and expert treatment for children who have contracted a disease.
We provide information and counsel to each child's family and consult with the child's referring physician to assure that the most positive outcome is achieved.
Our physicians provide consultation on a broad of spectrum of bacterial and viral conditions. And we also provide the latest innovative treatments and therapies for HIV infections and AIDS.
The division chief, Paul W. Spearman, MD, works with a team of outstanding pediatric physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners who specialize in the treatment of infectious disease.
SERVICES
The division services include inpatient and outpatient admissions and consultations for a variety of pediatric infectious conditions including:
- Serious or life-threatening infections
- Patients with a history of frequent, recurrent or unusual infections
- Poorly defined chronic, respiratory or gastrointestinal conditions
- Fevers of an unknown origin
- Antibacterial treatment failures
- Antiviral and antifungal therapies
- HIV infections and AIDS
Clinical Trials/Research: the team is also involved in clinical trials and research for therapies and cures for a variety of infectious diseases including:
- Herpes virus
- HIV
- Pneumococcus (severe upper respiratory infections caused by the Streptococcus bacterium)
- Syphilis
- TB
