Emory-Children's Center Division of Nephrology

Emory-Children's Center Division of Nephrology cares for children with kidney diseases and related medical conditions. Our services include all forms of dialysis, customized to the special needs of pediatric patients, as well as renal transplantation.

We provide a complete evaluation and treatment program for acute and chronic renal disorders, hypertension and fluid and electrolyte derangement.

For children with life-threatening, chronic renal disease, we provide dialysis maintenance care in the dialysis unit at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, the only dedicated pediatric unit in the state and one of only very few regionally and nationally. We also work with Emory's Kidney Transplant Center to provide maximum rehabilitation through kidney transplantation. This program, also based at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, serves our ultimate goal to provide successful kidney transplantation for all children with end stage renal disease (ESRD).

The Nephrology division offers continuity of care for children with progressive renal disorders.  Starting from a patient's first visit and continuing through the various stages of treatment, care is provided by a consistent team of physicians, nurses and nephrology specialists.

SERVICES

Our dialysis services include:

  • Hemodialysis (the blood is re-circulated outside the body using a dialyzer)
  • Peritoneal Dialysis (fluid is infused into the abdominal cavity where it draws out toxic substances from the tissues)
  • Our nephrologists are available for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with most general nephrologic disorders including:
    • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
    • Complex urinary tract infections
    • Nephrotic syndrome
    • Glomerulonephritis (a type of kidney inflammation)
    • Acute renal failure (a rapid decline of the kidney's ability to clear the blood of toxins)
    • Hematuria (blood in the urine)
    • Proteinuria
    • Primary nocturnal enuresis (bed-wetting)
    • Chronic renal insufficiency
    • Acid-base and electrolyte disorders
    • Growth disorders associated with kidney failure
