Emory-Children's Center Division of Rheumatology

Emory-Children's Center of Rheumatology provides comprehensive care for children with rheumatic diseases, which are disorders of the joints and connective tissues. These diseases are often chronic conditions, such as juvenile arthritis, which affects as many as 285,000 children each year in the U.S. alone.

We offer expert diagnostic services and evaluation as well as a variety of treatments for rheumatic diseases.  Customizing therapies to the special needs of each child, we continually monitor the effectiveness and side effects that are unique to each case.

Additionaly, we coordinate the care of each child in collaboration with appropriate pediatric subspecialists.

Our goal is to achieve a favorable outcome for each child by controlling and minimizing the effects of rheumatic illness and preventing long-term disability.  And we strive to provide educational information and guidelines that help support the family's care of their child.

SERVICES

Emory-Children's Center Division of Rheumatology treats children with a variety of rheumatic diseases including:

  • Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis: The cause of the condition in children is unknown but hereditary factors may increase risk. In children under 16, it is a persistent inflammation in the joints that can potentially interfere with growth.
  • Juvenile Ankylosing Spondylitis: A connective tissue disorder marked by an inflammation of the spine and large joints.
  • Vasculitis: A condition that appears with many autoimmune connective tissue disorders and causes inflammation of the blood vessels.
  • Scleroderma: A condition that causes degenerative changes in the joints, organs and skin, which often occurs as part of a connective tissue disease.
  • Systematic Lupus Erthematosus: An autoimmune disease that often resembles many other diseases. Lupus can result in severe or mild episodes of inflammation of joints, tendons, organs and connective tissues.
