The endocrinologists of Emory Crawford Long Hospital offer state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment for diseases of the glands and hormones of the body.  The name for the medical specialty called endocrinology is derived from the endocrine glands, which are the glands that secrete hormones throughout the bloodstream.  These hormones create a specific response in different parts of the body.  For example, the thyroid gland secretes a hormone that regulates the body?s temperature and the pituitary glands control growth.

The most common endocrine disease is diabetes, which affects as many as 16 million Americans.  Diabetes Type I occurs from a lack of the hormone insulin, which is secreted from the pancreas.  Without insulin, the body cannot process food and, in effect, starves itself.  Much more common is Diabetes Type II, which occurs from a resistance to insulin, usually as a result of its overproduction.  Type II often is referred to as adult onset diabetes because it develops gradually and often is caused or exacerbated by obesity.

In addition to diabetes, our endocrinologists treat other conditions including but not limited to:

• Diseases of the thyroid including hyperthyroidism (too much hormone), hypothyroidism (too little hormone) and thyroid cancer
• Tumors and cancers of the adrenal glands
• Growth disorders of the pituitary gland
