The Neonatal-Perinatal specialists of Emory Crawford Long Hospital are dedicated to the care of high-risk babies before and after they are born, as well as to the care of premature infants.  A neonatologist is a pediatrician with additional training and experience in the care of sick and premature infants.  Emory Crawford Long also offers perinatologists, specialists in maternal/fetal health.

Low-birth-weight babies are born every two minutes in the United States.  Usually premature, these babies are at risk for an array of conditions including undeveloped hearts, organs and respiratory systems.  Fortunately, the neonatal unit at Emory Crawford Long is a state-of-the-art facility with the latest technologies and equipment for the care and treatment of premature and at-risk infants.

In the last 20 years, skilled physicians working with new techniques and treatment innovations have made great advances in lowering the risks for premature infants. There have not been, however, significant improvements in preventing premature birth.  In fact, the rate of premature birth increased 31 percent between 1983 and 2003.

When a birth becomes other than routine, you and your family can be assured that our skilled neonatal-perinatal physician group has the expertise, facilities and equipment to care for your baby. Our neonatal intensive care nursery is a Level III nursery - a designation that indicates we can treat almost any medical or surgical newborn problem.
