More than 80 million Americans suffer from some form of vascular disease, which encompasses an array of disorders affecting the veins and arteries.  These can range from life-threatening conditions such as blood clots and other arterial blockages to less-dangerous but painful diseases such as varicose veins.

The vascular surgeons of Emory Crawford Long Hospital have been at the forefront of the great medical progress that has been made in recent years for the minimally invasive treatment of vascular disease.  Endovascular catheters, stents and grafts can be used to avoid what once was the necessity of large incisions during surgeries, and they now are used routinely for treatment and diagnosis of vascular disease.

One of the more widely known vascular procedures, angioplasty, has been in practice for 25 years.  This minimally invasive procedure has saved millions of lives through use of a balloon catheter inserted in the arterial artery and inflated to restore blood flow to the heart.  Today, the vascular surgeons of Emory Crawford Long Hospital also use stent grafts and other endovascular devices to diagnose and treat blockages throughout the body, including thoracic and abdominal aneurysms.  The types of cases that can be treated with minimally invasive measures are expanding daily.  Some instances, however, still require major surgery to repair arterial obstruction and aneurysms. The success of bypass grafts and other modern vascular techniques has revolutionized the world of traditional surgery.  The vascular surgeon teams at Emory Crawford Long Hospital are part of that revolution - as well as experts on all the latest procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease.
