Your first step to achieving awesome vision:

Emory Vision understands that exploring the possibility of a vision correction procedure is one of your most important undertakings! Our Center provides a custom evaluation to determine if you are a candidate for one of our advanced procedures.

Emory Vision uses state-of-the-art technology, for measuring your eyes and making a custom diagnosis. This allows Emory physicians to understand your eyes as uniquely as one looks at a fingerprint, and in turn this provides a roadmap for your custom treatment.

Consider what your exam will include:

How well you currently see is determined, both with and without corrective lenses, and the muscle balance, pupil size, and eye dominance are measured. Your physician will dilate your eyes and evaluate your tear film, lenses, retinas, and optic nerves to rule out any presence of disease. The health of your corneal tissue is checked and the pressure inside your eyes is measured.

  • Understanding how your pupil changes in size at dusk or nighttime is determined as it is important when considering refractive surgery. To obtain an accurate measurement, light amplification or infrared technology may be used.
  • A measurement of your corneal thickness is taken, as this information will be imperative to provide a custom refractive surgery.
  • Corneal topography measurement is performed and provides a critical component in helping your physician plan your finest visual result.
  • A cycloplegic refraction exam is completed in order to know how your eyes focus. Using special drops, your physician will dilate your pupils and help your eyes relax the muscles that change the shape of the lens. Now the true level of nearsightedness or farsightedness can be understood.

Once you have completed your evaluation, your Emory physician will discuss the risk, and benefits and limitations that may affect your custom vision correction.
