Convenient documentation pods
The new neuroscience intensive care unit has an open-style nursing station with state-of-the-art nursing documentation pods near each room.  Readily available access to our new Emory Electronic Medical Records (EeMR) system is an important feature for nurses and doctors in the care of our patients.

Best medical equipment
The new unit will utilize some of the best medical equipment in Georgia in order to provide caregivers faster accesss to life saving necessities.  The neuroscience medical director, Owen Samuels, neuro-critical care intensivist, says, "Our department will be more efficient and better able to expedite patients to the services they need.  I believe these additional ICU beds are a crucial step towards increasing our level of care."

Specialty areas
The growing continuum of neuroscience patient care at Emory Healthcare spans several levels with critical, intermediate, acute and rehab brain/stroke care.  Our nurses collaborate with multiple disciplines in an integrated neurology and neurosurgery patient care environment.  We are the department of choice if you are looking to become a clinical expert in specialty areas such as:

• Cerebral resuscitation
• Management of cerebral edema and increased intracranial pressure
• Hemodynamic and cerebral instability
• Monitoring abnormal electrical activity of the brain

Neuroscience residency program
The department of neurscience nursing provides a rich environment of learning and professional growth.  We have developed a new neuroscience nursing residency program with an 8 - 16 week preceptor-guided orientation.  Students in the program are fully employed staff members of Emory Healthcare.  The unit-based clinical nurse coordinator works with level IV clinicians to provide support, mentoring and ongoing bedside staff education. 

Neurosurgical nurse practioners on the intensive care units are also an expert clinical resource to the bedside nurses.  This participative model promotes an environment of team collaboration and autonomous nursing practice. Other educational programs we offer include:

• Neuroscience nursing and acute patient care techniques
• Advanced clinical skills
• Preparation for the national neuroscience nursing certification exam (CNRN).
