| Emory Healthcare employees based at Emory Crawford Long Hospital enjoy the special reward of a community-based medical practice combined with access to state-of-the-art academic and medical resources. More than 600 Emory School of Medicine faculty and 600 community-based physicians practice in this 583-bed hospital located in Midtown Atlanta. The hospital first opened in 1908 and since then has grown to meet the health care needs of more than 18,700 inpatients and 91,400 outpatients annually with a work force of over 2,300 employees.
At Emory Healthcare, our on-going commitment to professional care is easily demonstrated by the $270 million redevelopment project at Emory Crawford Long Hospital - the largest hospital construction project ever undertaken in Georgia. The new hospital and medical office tower includes expanded emergency care services, technically advanced imaging and surgical services, and comprehensive maternity and heart centers providing our health care professionals with the state-of-the-art resources they need to meet their goals for the highest quality patient care.
Innovative Opportunities With the 2002 renovation of Emory Crawford Long Hospital, opportunities were expanded, too. More cardiac PET scans are performed here than anywhere in the United States. We were the first in the world to thoroscopically implant biventricular leads and are among a handful of centers to participate in clinical trials testing radio frequency ablation for chronic atrial fibrillation patients. It also has one of the most utilized and fastest-growing cardiac catheterization services in Atlanta. Current research includes gene therapy and angiogenesis.
Innovative Education Emory Healthcare's commitment to education also sets us apart from other major clinical facilities. Emory Crawford Long Hospital utilizes an innovative, first-of-its kind educational facility to support medical education. Using high-definition cameras mounted in select cardiac procedure rooms, the heart center can broadcast live cases in high-definition format to a conference room, the hospital auditorium, or to anywhere in the world via satellite allowing us to train medical professionals in a way no one has done before.
