The EMORY HEALTHCARE (EHC) Administrative Fellowship is a two-year, project-based program that targets masters candidates and recent masters-level graduates in health care administration, business administration, public health and nursing administration. During the first year of the fellowship program, each fellow is assigned a senior-level executive who serves as his/her preceptor. In the second year of the program, the fellow is more involved in selecting the senior-level executive who serves as his/her preceptor. This selection is based on the fellow's needs and preferences, and the availability of the executive.
"Having a strong and vibrant administrative fellowship is an integral part of the development for all management at Emory Healthcare. Individuals recently coming out of strong graduate programs serve as a catalyst for the organization in terms of asking unbiased questions, challenging past assumptions, and providing high energy levels normally associated with advocates of change.
I personally take the program very seriously and believe we have a moral obligation to make it a strong program for the participants. However, I also believe that we as a large complex health care system are major beneficiaries of having these bright and talented people in our organization and working with them shoulder to shoulder to help run this business."
— John Fox, President and Chief Executive Officer

Preceptor Relationship Preceptors are chosen based on demonstrated commitment to the fellowship, and mutual interests of the fellow and the senior-level executive. The preceptor serves as the fellow's direct supervisor and provides professional guidance, mentoring and support during the 12-month rotation period.
Projects The fellow and his/her preceptor select assignments that are mutually beneficial to the fellow, the specific health care unit and the health system. Past projects include leading a major human resources and payroll systems conversion, creating a business plan for a service-line expansion and participating in developing a departmental strategic plan. Fellows also have participated in designing new clinical operations models in an outpatient physician practice setting, and in coordinating EHC's American Heart Association fundraising initiative. Examples of other projects include management of initiatives such as contract negotiations with outsourcing companies, impact analysis of a physician order entry system on operations and referral analyses. Fellows also assume interim supervisory roles as needed.
Informational Sessions In addition to leading and participating in projects, fellows organize and facilitate informational sessions referred to as Lunch-n-Learns. These monthly, one-hour sessions are intended to introduce the fellows to various members of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center (WHSC) and EMORY HEALTHCARE leadership, as well as to discuss topics that affect the health care industry.
Committee Rotations Fellows rotate among key committees to gain a broad background and understanding of the health care system and health sciences center. In addition to observing leaders, fellows gain an awareness of various decision-making processes and challenges facing today's executives.
