Gerneral Information About Participation Most of the effective epilepsy treatments used today have been tested through clinical trials or research studies. By participating in these trials, patients may be able to improve their diagnosis and treatment as well as aid in research that could help others. Participation is voluntary at all stages of the process.
Our Program Research studies at Emory are federally regulated and approved by the Emory University Institutional Review Board (IRB). The purpose of the IRB is to protect the patient. The IRB is composed of scientists, doctors, clergy, and local community citizens. The IRB reviews all studies for safeguards and reasonable risks in relation to potential benefits.
The staff of the Emory Epilepsy Center can provide information about Emory's current trials, and if a patient wishes to participate, he or she will be monitored throughout the procedure and follow-up. Data collected will be recorded, reviewed, analyzed, and shared with other research teams throughout the world. This ongoing research also helps provide our physicians with the refined knowledge and first-hand experience that keeps us among the leaders in advancing treatments and care.
