Vitreoretinal surgery and disease

Ophthalmic surgeons across the globe use techniques and instruments developed by Eye Center retina surgeons for surgery on the retina and vitreous, the jelly-like substance that fills the eye. They specialize in the treatment of diabetic eye disease, macular holes, detached retina and other retinal problems. They are well known for treating retinopathy of prematurity in babies and cytomegalovirus retinitis in AIDS patients. In addition, pioneering retinal research conducted at Emory, such as retinal cell transplantation, macular translocation surgery and new laser treatments, is expected to revolutionize the treatment of macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in individuals over age 60.
