Emory general surgeons are the surgical staff of the Emory Bariatric Center, a multi-specialty program that treats obesity using nutrition and exercise therapy, lifestyle education, pharmacotherapy, liquid meal replacement and weight-loss surgery. The surgical procedures offered by the center are:
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery (laparosocopic and open):
In addition to restricting food intake by creating a stomach pouch, the gastric bypass induces reduced calorie and nutrient absorption by diverting food from the first segment of the small intestine, typically producing significant weight loss. Following gastric bypass, most patients generally lose two-thirds of their excess weight within two years.
- Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding:
Involves placing a band made of special material around the stomach near the upper end, creating a small pouch and a narrow passage into the larger remainder of the stomach to limit food consumption. Patients feel full more quickly, causing them to eat less and lose weight.
- Sleeve Gastrectomy:
Restricts food intake without intestinal bypass or malabsorption through the laparoscopic removal of approximately 75 percent of the stomach, leaving the remainder shaped like a long tube or sleeve.
Colon and Rectal Surgery
Emory surgeons began performing laparoscopic colon surgery in 1992 and had performed more than 900 colorectal operations by early 2007. Of course, the particulars of each patient's case will determine whether open or laparoscopic methods are recommended.
