The Emory Section of Hospital Medicine is the largest academic hospital medicine program in the nation. With more than sixty physicians providing hospital medicine services at five hospitals in the greater metropolitan Atlanta area, Emory hospitalists account for over 30,000 admissions a year, and total patient encounters exceed 100,000 annually.
The Emory Section of Hospital Medicine was formed in 1999 by Dr. Mark Williams. Housing the "Journal of Hospital Medicine" and the soon to be released reference textbook, "Comprehensive Hospital Medicine," Emory has been at the forefront of the hospitalist movement.
In the Fall of 2005, a Palliative Care Consulting Service was launched at Emory Crawford Long and Emory University Hospitals. Led by Drs. Melissa Mahoney and Stephanie Grossman, both board-certified in Palliative Care, this palliative care initiative adds a new level of caring to the services offered by the Emory Section of Hospital Medicine.
