Chlorambucil (Leukeran)
ACTIONS/USES:  Immunosuppressant/Antiinflammatory.

For pulmonary fibrosis, it is used to decrease inflammation in the lung to decrease the scarring or damage to the lung.  It is also used to some types of cancer like lymphomas and leukemias and other inflammatory type diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

  • Anemia or low blood cell count is the most common side effect.
  • Increased risk of infections
  • Nausea and/or vomiting 
  • Some rare side effects include nervousness, tremors, and possible seizures.
  • Skin rashes may occur in combination with other medicines.
  • Increased risk of secondary cancer like leukemia can occur.
  • May affect fertility in both sexes.                       

 * Your doctor will monitor your blood counts more frequently while you are taking this medicine.

 SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

  • This medicine may be prescribed once a day or in divided doses.  You should take this medicine 1 hour before breakfast or 2 hours after the evening meal.
  • It is important to drink extra fluid while you are taking this medicine.
  • Report any signs of infection like fever to your doctor immediately.
  • Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any over-the-counter medicine.
  • You should avoid becoming pregnant if you or your partner are taking this medicine.  Notify your doctor immediately if you know or think you or your partner may be pregnant.
  • Notify your doctor if you develop loss of coordination or become agitated.
