Cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan)
ACTIONS/USES:  Immunosuppressant/Antiinflammatory. 

For pulmonary fibrosis, it is used to decrease inflammation in the lung to decrease the scarring or damage to the lung.  It is also used to treat some types of cancer like lymphomas and leukemias and other inflammatory type diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

  • Urinary bladder pain or blood in the urine. 
  • Nausea and/or vomiting.
  • Hair loss or darkening of the skin or fingernails.
  • Increased risk of infections.
  • Anemia or low blood cell count. 
  • Other less seen side effects include headache and dizziness.

POSSIBLE LONG-TERM EFFECT

  • Cancer of the urinary bladder

*** Your doctor will monitor your blood counts more frequently while you are taking this medicine.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

  • It is important to drink extra fluid while you are taking this medicine.
  • Take on an empty stomach unless you are having stomach upset.
  • Take this medicine in the morning.
  • Report any signs of infection like fever to your doctor immediately.
  • Report any unusual bruising or bleeding (including any blood in your urine) to your doctor immediately.
  • Before taking any other medicines, check with your doctor or pharmacist for possible drug interactions with Cytoxan.
  • If you are diabetic or taking insulin, it may cause low blood sugar.  You should monitor your sugar levels more closely and check with your doctor for any change in your insulin dose.
  • You should avoid becoming pregnant while taking this medicine.  Notify your doctor immediately if you know or think you may be pregnant.
