Oculoplastic Surgery Procedures at the Emory Plastic and Recosntructive Surgery Center

Oculoplastic surgical procedures are used to repair damage to the eyelids, the tear duct system and the orbit (eye socket) caused by physical trauma, congenital deformities, paralysis, tumors, aging or systemic diseases like Grave's Disease.

Available procedures include:

Eyelid Surgery (Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty)

Cosmetic eyelid surgery is designed to reduce puffiness and folding around the upper and lower lids. "Circles" and "crow's feet" around the eyes can often be eliminated by removing excess skin or fat, creating a smooth transition from the eyelid to the cheek area. Typically, the necessary incisions heal well. For women, the standard objective is to restore a clean crease in the upper eyelids and to re-create a smooth, visible strip of skin above the lashes. The usual approach in men is more conservative, avoiding an accentuated crease.

Cheek Lift (Mid-Face Lift)

This procedure is performed through the lower blepharoplasty incision (see above), producing a more natural elevation of the cheek area, and can be combined with a facelift for superior results.

Brow-Forehead Lift

Endoscopic or traditional approaches are used in this procedure to reposition the eyebrows, smooth the forehead and reduce the frown lines between the eyebrows. The endoscopic technique requires three small incisions behind the hairline, producing improved results with minimal scarring. A brow lift is often performed in conjunction with an upper eyelid lift for an enhanced, longer-lasting outcome.

Reconstructive Oculoplastic Surgery

This specialty focuses on:

  • Correction of ptosis, or congenital droopiness of the eyelids
  • Correction of entropion, or turning-in of the eyelids
  • Correction of ectropion, or turning-out of the eyelids
  • Retraction of the eyelids from thyroid disease
  • Repair or reconstruction of the eyelids following physical injuries or tissue removal for skin cancer
  • Surgical treatment of eyelid difficulties for patients who wear artificial eyes

Tear Duct Surgery

Blockage of the tear duct caused by aging, infection or trauma often causes excessive watering or recurrent eye-infections. Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) or Jones' tube placement, which restores flow by surgically bypassing the blockage, is highly successful and durable.

Orbital Surgery

Reconstructive surgery of the bony eye socket is performed to remove tumors and growths that may occur inside the socket and correct the damage they cause, to correct the appearance of protruding eyes often caused by Graves Disease or hyperthyroidism, and to repair orbital anomalies caused by accident or injury. Surgery can involve repositioning of the bone or expansion of the bony socket.
