Innovations
The Center has consistently been in the forefront of innovation, development and refinement in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery:
- In 1975, Emory plastic surgeons developed the musculocutaneous flap procedure for breast reconstruction which involved shaping a new breast from a section of skin, fat and/or muscle taken from the patient's stomach, back or other area of the body. This revolutionary method has since become the foundation for procedures that are now standard for reconstructive breast surgery.
- In 1993, Emory plastic surgeons adapted endoscopes for plastic surgery procedures. Shortly thereafter, Emory became one of the better known services in the country for minimally invasive techniques for breast reconstruction and augmentation; rejuvenation of the forehead, face, and neck; and contouring of the abdomen.
- The Center's advances in head and neck reconstruction stimulated the development of new forms of cervical esophageal reconstruction via free jejunal transposition as well as the use of the omentum for craniofacial reconstruction.
- Other Center-sponsored studies that have received national attention include investigations into the relationship of breast implants to autoimmune disease, evaluation of various methods of breast reconstruction and the effects of radiation therapy.
