IMRT: A New Shape for Hope

Radiation is often the first line of attack in eradicating tumor cells, and for many it is the first source of hope. But sometimes a tumor is close to sensitive tissue. In the past, that made it difficult to put enough radiation into a tumor to be effective. Now, there is a new hope for tumors. It is called Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy - IMRT. With IMRT, clinicians can exquisitely "paint" a precise radiation dose to the shape and depth of the tumor, while significantly reducing the adverse effects of doses on healthy tissue.

At Emory, we are using state-of-the-art technology to plan and deliver IMRT for various types of cancer. IMRT is one of the most exciting developments for producing significant breakthroughs in radiotherapy.
