Cardiothoracic Imaging

The Division of Cardiothoracic Imaging provides a full range of services involving the chest area including the lungs and heart.  Chest x-rays and CT scans are standard procedures in this division, providing a comprehensive evaluation of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.  We use the latest, innovative techniques and state-of-the-art equipment for screening and diagnostic imaging.

PROCEDURES

Our featured procedures include:

  • CT Screening for Lung Cancer, an innovative procedure that detects  tumors too small to be evident in chest X-rays. The department offers the most technologically advanced lung cancer screening examination using low-dose GE Light Speed Spiral Computed Axial Tomography (CT scans) for nodule detection, interlaced with active research in computer assisted diagnosis.
  • CT Angiography for Pulmonary Embolism, uses CT scans and computer diagnosis for potential blood clots in the lung.
  • Calcium CT screening for Coronary Artery Calcification, a joint program with the Emory Cardiology, this procedure focuses on the detection and quantification of coronary artery disease.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a CT Scan?
A specialized form of x-ray that produces cross-sectional images of specific parts of the body.

How does It work?
An x-ray tube focuses a precise beam of light on a section of the body. A computer analyzes the readings from the x-ray at thousands of different points and converts the information into images that can be studied.

What can it diagnose?
CT scans are used to examine soft tissues and internal organs because conventional x-rays can't differentiate bone, tissue, fat, gas and other organs.  CT scans can check the size and structure of an organ and determine if it is solid or filled with fluid. They are used to diagnose tumors, cancers, spine injuries and various other abnormalities of the body. They are also used as a rapid diagnostic tool for traumatic injuries.
