Abdominal Radiology at Emory
The Emory Division of Abdominal Imaging offers a full range of diagnostic and interventional procedures utilizing state-of-the art equipment. Abdominal radiology concentrates on areas of the body such as the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts, as well as organs of the abdominal and pelvic regions.
The department is directed by William C. Small, MD, PhD, an outstanding specialist in diagnostic radiology. Under his leadership, the department offers the latest innovations in the field.
PROCEDURES
The department provides a full range of state-of-the-art diagnostic and interventional procedures. Featured and standard procedures include:
- 3-D Virtual Colonoscopy, a minimally invasive method of evaluating the colon for polyps and masses using CT. The procedure reduces the discomfort and cost of a traditional colonoscopy. The test requires a physician order and costs $500, if not covered by your insurance provider. Contact: Virginia Harrow at (404) 712-1868.
- Ablation of HepaticTumors by RF Energy, the treatment of primary tumors or selected metatases to the liver with the use of radio frequency energy that causes the tumor to disintegrate over time.
- Percutaneous, (needle inserted through the skin), lung biopsy and other thoracic interventions.
- Non-vascular interventional procedures including:
- Percutaneous abscess drainage, percutaneous cholecystotomy, Percutaneous ethanol tumor ablation (disintegration)
- Sclerosis of hepatic and renal cysts and lymphoceles
- CT arterial portography and CT angiography.
- Abdominal and pelvic MR

Associate professor with Emory University School of Medicine where he also received his medical degree. He was board certified in diagnostic radiology in 1991.

He is an oral examiner of diagnostic radiology, with the American Board of Radiology. With a career in the field that spans almost 25 years, he is a graduate of Emory University Medical School and was board certified in radiology in 1977.
