Emory Breast Imaging Center
Every three minutes throughout the world, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. The good news is that successful treatment of breast cancer has been greatly enhanced by diagnosis and treatment in the earliest stages. Eight out of ten breast lumps are not cancerous and a mammogram can successfully detect breast cancer up to two years before it can be felt with self-examination.
The Emory Breast Imaging Center, performing both screening and diagnostic mammograms, is committed to providing patients and referring physicians with the highest quality mammography services in a timely manner. Under the leadership of, Carl D'Orsi, M.D., our breast radiologists direct the mammography examinations, perform breast ultrasound and all interventional procedures. They are also responsible for communicating with the patient and her physician in the event any abnormality is suspected or identified.
PROCEDURES
- Screening and diagnostic mammography: Uses dedicated mammography equipment and plain film technology to x-ray breasts
- Breast ultrasound: Uses high frequency sound waves to visualize breast cysts, nodules or lymph nodes
- Cyst aspiration: Insertion of a small gauge needle into the cyst to withdraw fluid for pathologic evaluation
- Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration: Uses ultrasound to locate problem area, followed by insertion of a small-gauge needle to area to withdraw cells for pathologic evaluation
- Ultrasound-guided core biopsy: Uses ultrasound to locate lesions followed by a small gauge needle to remove tissue for pathologic evaluation
- Stereotactic core biopsy: Computer-aided biopsy with needle to remove several cores of tissue for pathologic evaluation
- Breast wire/dye localization: Insertion of wire into problem area followed by the injection of dye to guide and mark the area for removal

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Are mammograms painful? Mammograms are generally not painful but can be uncomfortable for many patients due to the amount of compression required to place the breasts in the equipment necessary for filming. Discomfort may also depend on what time of the month the exam is being performed since some women experience breast tenderness during menstruation.
Are the interventional procedures painful? Interventional procedures include cyst aspirations, fine needle aspirations, core biopsies and breast localizations. Local anesthesia is administered to the site to limit the amount of discomfort. Minimal discomfort may be experienced.
How long will it be before I may return to work after having an interventional procedure? Usually the next day, unless you are having an excisional biopsy or surgery.
Are there any restrictions to my activities following a procedure? We ask our patients to refrain from any strenuous exercise and avoid any heavy lifting for approximately 24 hours.
How long does it take for my doctor to get the pathology results from my procedure? Usually between 5-7 working days. These results are sent to your referring physician and are not sent to the Breast Imaging Center.
