Visitor Guide | Surgery FAQS

What steps do I need to take to sign up for a surgical procedure?

In the event an Emory Sports Medicine Center physician determines you need a surgical procedure, an assistant will meet with you to complete the pre-surgical paperwork, sign consent forms, and pick a date for the surgery. You will be provided with a packet that details the location of the surgical center, as well as some basic instructions you should follow prior to surgery.

Will I need a pre-operative consultation with an anesthesia physician?

All patients will need a pre-operative visit with anesthesia. Most of the time this will be done on the same day as your surgery, so you will not need a separate appointment. If you have medical problems that are more complex, you may need to see the anesthesiologist during a special appointment prior to the day of surgery.

Where is my pre-op consultation?

The pre-op consultation will take place at the surgery center on the day of surgery. Directions are in the surgical packet that was given to you when the pre-op paperwork was completed.

What time do I arrive for my surgery?

Patients who have a same-day pre-op can expect a call from the pre-op nursing staff late in the day before surgery. During this call, the nurses will review some procedures you will need to follow and establish an arrival time for your surgery.

Should I stop taking my daily medications prior to surgery?

Please review all the medications you take with the pre-op nursing staff on your pre-op visit or pre-op phone consultation. The nurses will provide you with instructions for taking your medications.

Can I eat or drink anything the day of surgery?

You should not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery. If you break this rule, your surgery will be cancelled.

What type of clothing should I wear to my surgery?

You should arrive at the surgery center in comfortable clothing such as shorts, sweatpants and a T-shirt. Please leave all jewelry and other valuables at home.

What can I expect after surgery?

All patients are required to have a family member or friend drive them home from surgery. If you arrive at the surgery center and do not have someone to take you home, your case will be cancelled. You may require assistance with your day-to-day activities for the first couple of days after your surgery. We advise that someone stay with you for at least the first night after your surgery. If you are a shoulder patient, you may find that you are more comfortable resting in a recliner. Knee patients should minimize their time on stairs and prepare their house for mobility on crutches.

Who do I call if I am having problems after surgery?

If you are experiencing any problems after your surgery, please call 404-778-7137 during normal business hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

After-hours calls should be placed to the main Emory Clinic telephone number (404-778-5000). Ask to speak to the orthopaedic physician on call.
