- Replace fluid/body salts through rehydration solution packets with purified (boiled) water added, or drink the following recipe:
- Traveler's Woe Cocktail
One 8-oz. glass of apple, orange or other fruit juice (for potassium) One pinch of table salt (for sodium) 1/2 tsp. honey or corn syrup or 1 tbsp. table sugar (for glucose) 1/4 tsp. baking soda (optional)
- Bananas and rice help settle the stomach during diarrheal illnesses, while citrus fruits aid in rehydration.
- If you have only a mild illness, you may take Pepto Bismol as directed on the package.
- If diarrhea is more severe with cramping, take Imodium as directed for immediate relief of symptoms; be certain to read the package insert for directions.
- Your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic to take for self-treatment of the most common causes of traveler's diarrhea; take as instructed.
- If you experience bloody diarrhea accompanied by fever, if diarrhea persists beyond several days despite self-treatment or if you are unable to keep fluids down you should seek medical attention.
- If diarrhea continues after returning from a trip or begins after arrival home, call Travel Well for an evaluation.
