Physician assistants (PAs) or Nurse practitioners (NPs) have an active role in providing healthcare, from the initial office evaluation to pre- and post-operative care. PAs and NPs work under the supervision of a physician and are formally trained to provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive healthcare services as delegated by a physician. The Department of Urology has PAs and NPs who take medical histories, examine and treat patients, order and interpret laboratory tests and X-rays, make diagnoses, and prescribe medications. They are part of our team along with physicians, residents, and nurses. They may see you in the office, in the hospital, or speak with you on the telephone — they are here to help answer questions, make diagnoses, and start treatment. You may see the PA or NP at your appointment, but the attending physician will also be available if there are any questions. Their presence will allow you to receive quality care in a more timely fashion.
