In this rarely used option, a surgeon makes an incision with a knife to remove the stone(s). While this was the original form of treatment for all stones, today it comprises less than 5 percent of all treatments for renal stones.

Because of the expertise of the Emory University faculty in removing stones in a minimally invasive fashion, patients rarely, if ever, resort to this treatment option.
