Located in the outpatient complex of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy at The Emory Clinic, the Emory Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory is accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories and staffed by highly qualified and experienced vascular technologists and physicians. Affiliated with one of the most respected and progressive vascular surgery centers in the world, the lab is ideally positioned to provide the most advanced diagnostic services currently available.
The lab's dedication to consistently upgrading the versatility and flexibility of its operational options was exemplified by its recent installation of the world's first Convertible Ultrasound platform, ZONARE Medical Systems' z.one system, which can be adapted from a full-featured, cart-based mechanism into a premium, compact unit, allowing point of care diagnostic imaging regardless of the patient's location. Since the system's technology is software-based, upgrades will be fast and convenient, ensuring that performance will increase as improvements in processing power become available.
The lab's duplex ultrasound, segmental pressure and velocity waveform studies are performed on an outpatient basis and can detect and analyze virtually any known vascular disorder.
Duplex ultrasound traces the patient's blood flow with sound waves, whereupon color images are produced that assess the degree of blood vessel narrowing, the presence or absence of blood flow, or the size of blood vessels. This technique can diagnose and evaluate cerebrovascular conditions, AV fistula, stroke risk due to carotid artery disease, aortic aneurysms, upper and lower extremity venous disease, and the status of bypass grafts.
For upper and lower arterial studies, segmental pressure studies involve applying painless pressure to measure blood flow, while velocity waveform studies scrutinize selected arterial velocity signals via ultrasound and spectral analysis to localize the level of disease to the inflow, outflow, or runoff vessels.
If ordered by a division physician, computed tomography angiography and magnetic resonance angiography are done at the Department of Radiology.
To schedule a diagnostic study at the Emory Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory, prospective patients should contact (404) 778-3712 from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. (EST), Monday through Friday. Another scheduling option is to contact Emory HealthConnectionSM at (404) 778-7777 or 1-800-75-EMORY, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. HealthConnectionSM offers immediate access to information on Emory services and physicians and can assist in making appointments.
Referring physicians should contact Annette Gunnoud, RVT, the lab's chief technologist, at (404) 778-3326.
A financial assessment will be performed prior to confirming an appointment, with the following information being requested:
Referral from the primary care physician
The treating physician's name, address, and telephone number
The patient's name, address, telephone number, date of birth, and social security number
