Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is one of the most effective treatments for depression, particularly when a patient has failed medication or needs a rapid improvement in symptoms. Although ECT has long suffered from a negative image as shown in the popular press and movies such as "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", the modern practice of ECT has come a long way from these stigmatizing portrayals. ECT works by electrically stimulating the brain and improving the release of neurochemicals known to be important in the treatment of depression. This treatment is administered under anesthesia and has become increasingly safe in the years since it was first introduced in the early 1930s.
The ECT Treatment Unit is located in the Wesley Woods Geriatric Hospital and provides services to both inpatients and outpatients.
