STATEMENT OF RESEARCH FOCUS:
I have three clinical research projects in progress, and I am the primary investigator in each one. Two studies involve evaluating patients for the presence of laryngopharyngeal reflux: The first involves patients who have had endoscopic sinus surgery and continue to have chronic sinus inflammation. These patients are being evaluated for reflux disease using a specially designed 3-sensor pH probe that can detect reflux in the nasopharynx in addition to the lower esophagus and the upper esophageal sphincter. The second study involves the evaluation of patients undergoing a sleep study to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea with simultaneous 24-hour dual sensor pH study to evaluate for gastroesophageal and laryngopharyngeal reflux disease.
The third project is titled "Evaluation of postoperative pain and pain medication usage after sinonasal Surgery." This involves a prospective evaluation of pain and pain medication usage in patients undergoing sinus and nasal surgical procedures.
I am also working with Patricia Hudgins, MD, on evaluating a large group of patients to characterize the frequency of CT scan anatomic variants in the nasofrontal recess and frontal sinus.
I have five Human-Investigation-Committee-approved clinical research projects, including the three aforementioned projects.
