RESEARCH FOCUS

As Pathology Core Director for the NIH Head and Neck SPORE, I work closely with researchers at Emory and other institutions to explore the biology of head and neck cancer.  I have developed an archival tissue data bank of 300 samples that are cross-referenced to treatment and outcome in order to elucidate metastatic factors in oral cancer.   In addition I have a 300 patient database of oropharyngeal carcinoma for future studies including HPV- positive tumors.  As Director of the Head & Neck Tissue Bank, I have also initiated collection of fresh frozen tissue from a variety of head and neck tumors to facilitate future collaborations and enable protocols that are inefficient or ineffective in formalin-fixed archival tissue.  I am also involved in a collaborative effort with Georgia Institute of Technology engineers developing computer modeling systems for the analysis of features in head and neck cancer. Working closely with Otolaryngologists, I am involved in the head and neck tumor pathology and how they relate to clinical outcomes.
